HISTORY

A few thousand years ago, the inhabitants of northern Europe were already practising cremation. A thousand or so years before our era, the Greeks and Romans were burning their dead for practical reasons: to make it easier to transport and preserve them. Little by little, cremation became associated with heroism, military glory and patriotism until it became the privilege of warriors and battlefield heroes. But about 100 years after Christ was born, cremation was gradually abandoned. In the Western world, a slow return to cremation only came about in the 20th century. As we enter the 21st century, roughly 30% of the American population and 50% of the Canadians are choosing cremation for economic, environmental or family reasons.
